A modest-sized community, Andover, Kansas, lies split among the areas of Butler and Sedgwick counties on an area of approximately seven square miles. At the time of the 2000 census, the city was home to a population of just under 7,000. By July 2008, it was estimated that this figure had risen to more than 10,000, for a growth rate of more than 50%.
Most of the city lies within Butler County, and Andover is considered a part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled in February 1869 and was named Cloud City, after a local railroad engineer. However, in 1880, after the residents of the community had a major disagreement with the man, the name of the town was changed to Andover. It officially incorporated as a city on February 4, 1957.
Residents of Andover have a median annual household income of just under $65,000, according to estimates taken in 2007, higher than the state's average of around $47,500. The median value of houses and condos in this community is just under $177,000 as of 2007 estimates, also higher than the Kansas average of around $121,000.
Children residing in Andover attend the public schools in the Andover Public School District 385, which includes two high schools, two middle schools and six elementary schools. For post-secondary education, the city is home to a satellite campus of Butler County Community College. There are three golf courses in the community, two within one mile of one another, and each year, residents and visitors come out en masse to witness the Greater Andover Days Celebration.
