A mid-sized suburban community near Wichita, the city of Derby, Kansas, lies on an area of approximately 7.5 square miles in Sedgwick County. The community was formerly known as El Paso. As of estimates taken in July 2008, the city was home to a population of just over 22,500, which counts for an increase of 26.5% since the time of the 2000 census.
Derby residents are decidedly middle class on average, with an estimated annual median household income in 2007 of $64,693, up from it was $58,508 in 2000. Likewise, residents had a median value of houses and condos of $149,403 in 2007, up from $104,000 in 2000. Transportation equipment, education and health care are the most popular industries in which residents find employment.
Children who live in Derby have the option to attend public schools in the Derby Unified School District, which has nine elementary schools, a sixth-grade center, a middle school, an alternative high school and Derby Senior High School. St. Mary's is a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade Catholic school providing a religious alternative. The Derby Public Library serves the research and media needs of residents, while the nearest hospital is in Wichita, just nine miles away.
Attractions abound in Derby, with the most popular the Rock River Rapids water park, especially attractive in the hot Kansas summers. Others include the Derby Skate Park, the Derby Historical Museum, Frog Holler Paintball Field, and the Derby Recreation Center, with an indoor pool, fitness center, indoor track, racquetball courts and an art center. There are three parks in the city, Riley, Hand and English parks. The city is home to the Derby Twins baseball team and annually it hosts the Derby Days festival the first weekend in June.
